Banco Espirito Santo was once the largest Portuguese bank by market value, and controlled by the Espirito Santo family. In August 2014, the country’s central bank took over the control of Banco Espirito Santo in a US$6.6 billion rescue.

Banco Sabadell is one of the biggest and oldest banking groups in Spain. Based in Barcelona, it was established in 1881 and has an annual revenue exceeding US$9.8 billion. The bank caters to small and medium enterprises and serves 12 million customers. Banco Sabadell's subsidiary, BStartup, was founded in 2014 to support entrepreneurs through two investment vehicles: BSartup10, which targets startups during their set-up phase and offers highly customized services and Sabadell Venture Capital, which invests in startups seeking Series A or B funding. BiG Start Ventures is an early-stage investor in European startups involved in fintech, insurance and cybersecurity. Established in Lisbon in 2015, it is part of the Portuguese bank Banco de Investimento Global (BiG) with its headquarters in Lisbon. To date, it has participated in three seed funding rounds.

Carlos Lei Santos is the CEO and co-founder of P2P mesh network platform HypeLabs that was established in 2015. He graduated in Computer Science at the University of Porto in 2014 while working at Simbolo II.  Lei has worked for seven years as an IT manager at tech agency Simbolo II, providing assistance to clients like IBM and Banco Santander. He was also a mentor for various tech and startup initiatives.

Ramón Blanco Duelo worked for Banco Santander before founding Selftrade.es in 1999. Selftrade.es, one of the first Spanish online brokers, was sold to Boursorama Banque in 2002. Blanco was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and has an MBA from the Harvard Business School in USA. A specialist in corporate digital transformation processes, he currently has roles as CEO, Executive Chairman and investor in several fintechs and other companies involved in internet banking, brokerage and e-commerce.

Carlos Ricci Ricci has an MBA in marketing from Minas Gerais Catholic Pontifical University and an MBA in business finance from the Getulio Vargas Foundation.He has worked in banking for over 30 years, including more than 14 years in sales and risk management at Banco Fidis. He also worked as an account manager at ABN AMRO bank for over 16 years. He is now the co-founder and Head of Customer Success of edtech startup Blox.

Banker-turned-toymaker Miguel Pina Martins started his educational toys business, Science4you, as his final-year project at University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE), where he was studying Finance. Upon graduation, he worked as an analyst at Banco de Investimento Global for four months before quitting to focus on his startup full time. Miguel Pina Martins was born in 1985. In 2018, he published a book A Ciência de Brinca (The Science of Play in English), about his business experiences. 

Born in 1968, seasoned IT professional José Paiva graduated in Informatics from the University of Lisbon in 1992. After stints at Banco de Portugal and INESC, he spent 18 years working for the Portuguese IT firm Novabase. The executive director at Novabase Business Solutions in Brazil left to join Link Consulting as a director. He left after seven months to set up JOBBOX in 2013.Paiva met Pedro Oliveira at the Startup Lisboa incubator. They co-founded the online tech recruitment portal JOBBOX in 2013, with Paiva as CEO. JOBBOX was later rebranded as Landing.Jobs.

Concept Investimentos is a Brazilian mid-market private equity investor based in São Paulo. Focusing mainly on medtech, the firm was established in 2016 with its first investment in Maquira, a leading manufacturer of dental products in Brazil. It has invested in three companies so far, including participation in the R$1.7m seed investment round of Brazilian edtech Blox.Founding partner Rafael Pilotto Gonçalez previously worked at Pacific Investimentos’ private equity division and Pacific’s partnership with One Equity Partners, JPM’s former global private equity arm in Brazil. He has also worked for the private equity arm of Banco Votorantim and London-based private equity firm Actis.
