The merged entity of China’s two largest local services rivals, Meituan-Dianping is worth some US$18 billion. Its total transaction volume reached RMB 170 billion in 2015. Now headed by Meituan founder Wang Xing, the Tencent-backed company is China’s largest on-demand, or O2O (online-to-offline), services provider, offering food delivery, restaurant booking, group buying, movie ticket booking and more.

Gan is best known for being the 67th employee of Alibaba and the former COO of Meituan-Dianping. Before joining Alibaba in 1999, Gan had worked at a state-owned coal trading enterprise for five years. At Alibaba, he served in multiple roles, including as director of online operation, director of marketing, regional manager and vice president. Gan left Alibaba to become COO of Meituan in 2011. In 2016, he was named the first president of Meituan-Dianping's Internet Plus University, which was founded to train company employees. Gan resigned from Meituan-Dianping in 2017 to join Hillhouse Capital as managing partner.

Launched in 2003, Dianping is China's most popular restaurant-reviewing and group-buying service. It merged with closest rival Meituan in October 2015, in a US$15 billion deal.

Hu Yao graduated in 2009 from Nankai University in Tianjin with a bachelor's degree in Software Engineering. He was CTO at renren.com from 2008 to 2012 and a senior software engineer at Meituan Dianping from 2013 to 2014. From 2014 to 2016, he was VP of ONE Smart Piano. He co-founded Waterdrop in 2016 and now serves as the general manager of Shuidi Huzhu.

Shen Peng had first tried founding a startup while studying finance at Beijing's Central University of Finance and Economics from 2006 to 2010. In 2009, he joined Meituan – now known as Meituan Dianping – as its tenth employee. At the age of 23, he was in charge of Meituan's group buying business in north China. Shen was also a key player when Meituan expanded into the food delivery business. He received his master's degree in retail management from the Neoma Business School through a partnership with the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. He founded Waterdrop in 2016 and has served as its CEO since.

Bao holds two bachelor’s degrees in Finance and Communications Engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in Financial Mathematics from the University of Chicago. He worked as an associate at Morgan Stanley's Global Capital Markets business unit from 2011 to 2015. Bao then worked as an investment associate at Chinese group buying website Meituan-Dianping from 2015 to 2016 and at Legend Capital from 2016 to 2017. In 2017, he co-founded Huajuan Mall and has since served as head of strategy.

After earning his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Zhang worked as an advisor at American Management Systems, an IT consulting firm based in the US. In 2003, he founded Dianping.com, one of China’s biggest online lifestyle services providers, and served as CEO and chairman until 2015. After Dianping.com merged with group-buying giant Meituan in 2015, Zhang became chairman of Meituan-Dianping.

Founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google started out as a web search engine. It then grew into a provider of various web services (e.g. email, web publishing) and subsequently became one of the world’s biggest tech companies, standing alongside Apple, Microsoft and Amazon. As an investor, Google is notably one of the earliest investors in Chinese internet giants Baidu and Meituan-Dianping.

Hong Kong-based Jeneration Capital was founded in 2015 by Jimmy Chang, a former banker at Morgan Stanley. It now manages approximately US$2bn in capital, utilizing a multi-strategy investment approach with an emphasis on direct investment and dynamic asset allocation across private equity, public equity and diversified fund investments. In terms of direct investment, Jeneration Capital mainly invests in growth-stage technology-enabled companies in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on Greater China. 

One of the largest institutional investors, GIC is a sovereign wealth fund managed by the Singapore government. With over US$100 billion under management, GIC invests in companies from over 40 countries.

Founded by Li Shujun, the former CFO of Shengda, in 2006, Trustbridge Partners is a venture capital and private equity firm focusing on growth-stage and expansion-stage investments in Chinese companies in new energy, environmental protection, new materials, new media, retailing, healthcare, education, e-commerce, etc. The sources of its funds come mainly from university foundations in the US (such as Columbia University, Stanford University, New York University), world-renowned investment firms (Temasek Holdings, Kerry Group, etc.), and private investors.

A former Alibaba and Dianping top executive, Lu Xin (b. 1981) is a mother of two. She headed Chinese product operations at Alibaba before joining China’s largest restaurant review site Dianping as its chief traffic officer in early 2010. In January 2015, she quit and left behind her annual million-dollar salary to start Nanguache, her second business venture.

Coatue is a tech sector hedge fund that invests in public and private equity markets. It is run by Philippe Laffont, who founded the hedge fund after leaving Tiger Management in 1999. Coatue is based in New York City and has several other offices around the globe. Its Beijing office was set up in 2014 and has since invested in several notable Chinese startups, including Didi Chuxing, Mafengwo and Kuaikan Comic.

Li worked as a regional sales manager at Dianping, the largest restaurant review website in China, from 2008 to 2015, where he successfully built and led a team of more than 300 sales experts, helping the company achieve considerable sales revenue.

Wang Xing is the founder of Meituan (a Chinese version of Groupon).
