FSI is an independent private equity firm based in Milan. It currently manages the mid-market Fund FSI I. Before its launch in 2017, the FSI investment team had already made PE investments in the Italian mid-market for several years at Fondo Strategico Italiano.The FSI investors include some of Italy’s largest institutional investors, primary sovereign funds from the Middle East, Far East and Central Asia. Indonesia’s first unicorn, Gojek started out providing on-demand app-powered motorcycle taxi services. Tokopedia is an Indonesian e-commerce marketplace, which in 2017 become the most popular site of its kind in Indonesia. Through partnerships with fintech companies, it has added new features that enable customers to buy gold and mutual funds. Besides foreign e-commerce marketplaces such as Lazada, Tokopedia’s closest rival is B2C/C2C marketplace Bukalapak, another Indonesian unicorn. 

Founded in Chicago in 2011, Hyde Park invests in Midwestern US and occasionally Canadian startups from early-stage usually through two investment rounds across tech sectors.  It currently has 62 startups in its portfolio and has managed 12 exits to date. Its most recent investments in January 2021 include Canadian e-commerce site BlackCart’s $8.8m Series A round and US podcast database Podchaser’s $5.7m Series A round. In November 2020, it invested in real estate productivity software NestEgg’s $7m Series A round. 

Founded in 2015, M25 is an early-stage VC based in Chicago, investing solely in companies headquartered in the US Midwest across tech sectors, almost exclusively at seed stage. It currently has 77 companies in its portfolio and has managed eight exits to date. Its most recent investments include in gaming monetization app Metafy’s $3m seed round in December 2020 and in the $2.7m seed round of mobile online store creation app CASHDROP in August 2020. Founded in 1843, Connecticut-based Stanley Black & Decker, is one of the oldest US manufacturing companies. It has acquired tons of organizations in recent decades and invests in a very selected number of startups. Its most recent disclosed tech startup investments via its VC arm Stanley Ventures were in the 2021 $1.8m seed round of Spain’s Triditive, and in the 2019 undisclosed investment round of Argentinian field operations software Iguana Fix.

HUNOSA Group is a Spanish energy and mining company based in the northern region of Asturias, founded in 1967. Its only disclosed tech startup investment to date was in the 2021 $1.8m seed round of Asturias-based Triditive the first automated additive manufacturing technology.

Founded in Colorado in 2006, Techstars is a prolific investor and accelerator. More than 2,300 companies have entered its portfolio, with a combined market cap of $32bn. It generally invests at the pre-seed and seed stages across sectors and geographies and has provided over $11.4bn in investment, with 86% of companies still active or acquired.Every year, it selects over 500 startups to join its three-month accelerators, held globally, investing $120,000 in each startup and providing access to the Techstars network for life. Its most recent investments include in the undisclosed January 2021 pre-seed rounds of Latvian logistics monitoring platform Kedeon and US product development software Bild.

LeapFrog Investments is an impact-focused investor, managing over $1.6bn in assets mainly investing in Africa and Asia. Its “profit with purpose” has led to investments in startups that provide healthcare, financial services and insurance for low-income consumers. Since it was founded in 2007, LeapFrog has attracted funds from Prudential, AXA, Swiss Re and Omidyar Network, becoming the first impact investor in the world to reach the $1bn milestone. It’s headquartered in South Africa and Singapore.LeapFrog is best known for its investments in the insurance sector. One of the most prominent companies in its portfolio is BIMA, the mobile-based insurance provider that has provided coverage in Ghana, Bangladesh, Cambodia and many other countries. In 2020, LeapFrog invested in Indonesian startup PasarPolis, which is a broker for a wide range of microinsurance products. In the healthcare and biotechnology sectors, LeapFrog has funded Indian genetic diagnostics company MedGenome, as well as Goodlife Pharmacy, a Kenyan company providing access to affordable medicine in the East African country.

Founded in 1999, TLCOM Capital now has offices in Kenya, Nigeria and the UK. Originally a global VC investor, its key investment objective now is to tackle Africa’s greatest challenges via its TIDE Africa Fund that was established in 2017.Total funding to date stands at $300m and investments range from $500,000 to $10m.  It currently has 12 portfolio companies and has managed 13 exits. Recent investments include the $6m Series A round of Kenyan agro-focused insurtech PULA and the $7.5m Series A round of Nigerian edtech uLesson Education.

Founded in 2013, Asia Africa Investment & Consulting (AAIC) is a Japanese VC that invests in developing nations in Africa. Based in Singapore, the Japanese investment team are also involved in consultancy work. To date, AAIC has invested in eight companies. Investments during 2020 include two Egyptian startups: mobile teleradiology medtech Rology’s $860,000 seed funding in September and mental health medtech platform Shezlong’s Series A round in June.

Founded in 1980, Western Technology Investment invests in tech and life science startups. To date, it has invested over $6bn in 1,300 companies worldwide across diverse market segments.The Silicon Valley-based WTI currently has more than 500 companies in its global portfolio. Recent investments include US anti-aging medtech Elevio’s $15m funding in November 2020 and the $4.3m seed round in August 2020 for US fintech for teens Copper Banking.

Nigerian investment bank and investor CardinalStone Partners was founded in 2008. It invests in enterprises with the potential to transform diverse sectors deemed to be strategic to the development of the economies in Nigeria, Ghana and other West African countries.The VC also reviews potential investments in relation to their ESG impact. CardinalStone currently has six companies in its portfolio including Nigerian gym chain i-Fitness and Nigerian fintech Appzone. In 2020, it raised $50m for a new private equity fund, CardinalStone Capital Advisers Growth Fund. 

Founded in Nairobi in 2017, Chandaria Capital invests in African tech and non-tech startups across market segments. It currently has 13 companies in its portfolio. Recent investments include Kenyan diagnostics medtech startup Ilhara Health’s $3.8m Series A round in 2020 and $735,000 seed funding in 2019. The VC has also joined the seed investment round for Kenyan food and beverage startup Savannah Brand in 2019.
