China- and Asia Pacific-focused SAIF Partners is one of China's largest homegrown PE firms, managing about $4 billion in capital. Led by former World Bank economist Andy Yan, it has invested in more than 200 companies. Taking a value-based investment approach, it says: "We generally make individual equity investments of between $10 million and $100 million, in one or more rounds of financing, and generally seek to obtain a significant minority equity ownership position in the range of 15% to 40% of a portfolio company." SAIF also has a strong presence in India.

Gopher Asset Management is a subsidiary of Noah Holdings, China’s first and largest independent wealth management company and only NYSE-listed wealth manager. Set up in 2010, Gopher’s assets under management reached RMB 86.7 billion in 2015, up 74.3% from 2014. Of these assets, PE/VC assets more than tripled to comprise 43.7% of total portfolio in 2015, versus 20.9% in 2014. Gopher’s investments cover nearly 1,000 high-growth companies in TMT, mobile Internet, IoT, healthcare, high-tech manufacturing and more. In 2016, it is focusing on Internet-based businesses relating to big data in healthcare, education, culture and finance.

With currently over $21bn of AUM, Baring Private Equity Asia (BPEA) was started in Hong Kong in 1997 by Jean Eric Salata, as the regional Asian PE investment arm of UK-based Baring Private Equity Partners. With $300m in its first fund, it focused on riding China’s economic rise spurred by the country’s market liberalization. In 2000, Salata led a management buyout of BPEA and continues to head the firm today as CEO and Founding Partner. BPEA has invested in more than 100 companies, across healthcare, logistics, IT services, media, education, financial services and retail. It is one of the largest independent PE firms in Asia and has eight offices across the continent.With offices in China, India, Japan, Australia, and Singapore, it currently has around 43 portfolio companies, almost all Asia-based, across multiple business segments in tech and non-tech startups, especially in bricks-and-mortar education establishments. It also makes acquisitions, including most recently of US outsourcing services company Virtusa in February 2021.Other recent investments include in the June 2021 $85m Series C round of Portuguese home physiotherapy tech solution SWORD Health, the world’s fastest-growing musculoskeletal solution, and in the November 2020 $198m Series D round of Chinese computer coding for kids edtech Codemao. 

With the approval of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, BOC International (China) Limited was established in February 2002. It is jointly controlled by BOC International Holdings Limited, China National Petroleum Corporation, State Development & Investment Corporation, Hongta Tobacco Group Corporation, China General Technology (Group) Holding Limited, and Shanghai State-owned Assets Operation Corporation. Headquartered in Shanghai, BOC International (China) Limited has 115 branches in over 80 Chinese cities including Beijing and Shenzhen. BOC International (China) Limited engages in PE investment, alternative investment and futures business through its wholly-owned subsidiaries including BOC International Investment Co., Ltd. It also collaborates with BOC International Holdings Limited, which was established by Bank of China in Hong Kong in 1998, for marketing, risk management, and other business. BOC International (China) Limited went public on Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2020.

Beijing-based Telescope Investments is a VC/PE firm, investing primarily in consumer, supply chain, education, and healthcare sectors. Telescope is founded by Du Yucun, former CEO of Tianjin HomeWorld Group, a Chinese supermarket chain, and SAIF Partners. Du Yucun is the son of Du Sha, one of China’s most well-known and respected entrepreneurs. Du Sha is the founder and chairman of Pacific Links, a former acclaimed Professor of Economics at the Nankai University, and founder of HomeWorld Group. Yucun, former CEO of Tianjin HomeWorld Group, a Chinese supermarket chain, and SAIF Partners. Du Yucun is the son of Du Sha, one of China’s most well-known and respected entrepreneurs. Du Sha is the founder and chairman of Pacific Links, a former acclaimed Professor of Economics at the Nankai University, and founder of HomeWorld Group. Avid traveler and entrepreneur Peng Tao holds a telecommunications degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and a PhD from the University of Melbourne. He has visited over 40 countries and was a former consultant at McKinsey, as well as the founder of two failed startups.

Central Java’s highest national exam scorer, Anggita Arum Pertiwi (known as Gita), is currently pursuing her undergraduate studies in Accounting at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta. Originally from Temanggung regency in Central Java, Gita won third place in the National Accounting Challenge 2015. She is IWAK’s financial controller and also works as a teaching assistant at UGM. IWAK is a crowdfunding startup for commercial fish farming.

Before Idachu, Hou Pengfei co-founded a domestic help matching service with Xue Jiao, CEO of Idachu.

With experience in running a car rental business during a part-time job at college, Xu Peiwen first studied at the University of Malaya, and later pursued his postgraduate studies in Computer Science at Hong Kong University. Xu is responsible for product design, marketing and customer service at iRent.

Serial entrepreneur Pedro Oliveira has a master’s in Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. Following internships at Accenture and EDP, he worked at EDP as an IT business analyst and project manager. He later joined INOV INESC Inovação as an associate researcher and worked there for more than three years. Oliveira also has a postgraduate qualification in Foresight, Strategy and Innovation from the Lisbon School of Economics and Management.Oliveira met José Paiva at the Startup Lisboa incubator. Oliveira had founded an event management startup Entrepreneurs Break and had also established the now defunct booking site Oops!Booking in 2012. In 2013, he teamed up with Paiva to co-found online tech recruitment platform JOBBOX that was later pivoted as Landing.Jobs.

Unbabel's Co-founder and CEO Vasco Pedro is a  language technology expert and serial entrepreneur and holds a bachelor’s degree in Language and Knowledge Engineering from the University of Lisbon, and a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Language Technologies from Carnegie Mellon University. While at Carnegie Mellon, he interned at Siemens Medical Solutions and Google. Before co-founding Unbabel, he had co-founded adtechs Bueda and Dezine. He is also a Mentor and Associate at Beta-i startup promotion association in Lisbon.

Pessanha co-founded Unbabel in 2013 and was its CMO, before leaving the startup in August 2016 to join healthcare marketplace Care Revolutions as COO in Los Angeles. She is also a co-founder of Lisbon-based accelerator and NGO Beta-i and of energy tech startup ActualSun and was also Director at the Founder Institute in Lisbon. Pessanha majored in Business Administration at the New University of Lisbon. She also spent three years working at tech company TIMWETECH, in product marketing and business development.  

Self-confessed geek and chess lover João Pedro Ribeiro holds a master’s degree in Biomedical/Medical Engineering from the University of Minho. His master’s thesis project in developing a 3D modeling application for orthopedic surgeons became the base of PeekMed.

Pedro Moura combines his knowledge of Computer Science and Sociology – the former as a graduate of the Instituto Superior Technico and the latter as a postgraduate of the University of Evora – in his line of work. Moura started his career co-founding several companies such as social shopping platform Wishareit and e-commerce social platform GetSocial, where he served as CTO. He is currently an adviser for the latter and is the CEO of mobile software platform Mobizy.

A senior engineer with nearly two decades of experience, Pedro Moreira was a consultant for 11 years before he became a project manager at Aguas do Porto. He is currently an IT director at Aguas do Porto.In 2015, Moreira co-founded Portuguese startup Knok Healthcare, now known as Knokcare. The healthtech’s chief strategist is also an assistant professor at the Polytechnic of Porto’s School of Engineering. He received his master’s degree from the University of Minho, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Porto.
