Cornell and Stanford-educated Fulbright scholar João Barros is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Porto and teaches in the MBA program at the Porto Business School. He has also held visiting appointments at MIT and Carnegie Mellon. He has co-founded two startups, Streambolico and Veniam, of which he is also CEO. Between 2009 and 2012, Barros served as National Director of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program, a five-year international partnership funded by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology. With a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, Frank Lin has over 25 years of technical and managerial experience in medtech and aerospace. Before founding CH Biomedical in 2008, he was the principal staff engineer at Kriton Medical, the predecessor of HeartWare International (now Medtronic), leading the computational fluid dynamic design of its Heartware Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD) system. Lin holds 15 US and international patents in left ventricular assist device and turbomachinery. He is also an adjunct professor at the Academy of Engineering and Technology, Fudan University.

Leo Zhu received his PhD in Statistics from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he specialized in statistical modeling of computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI), He was a student of Professor Alan Yuille whose PhD in theoretical physics was supervised by Dr Stephen Hawking. Prior to co-founding and becoming the CEO of China’s leading AI technology startup YITU Healthcare, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s AI laboratory and a research fellow at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University.

Ex-NetSuite software engineer Albert (who goes by one name) has a bachelor’s in Mathematics and Computer Science from Purdue University. He was a classmate of Traveloka co-founder and CEO Ferry Unardi at Purdue.

Beijing Foreign Studies University graduate formerly employed at Bertelsmann AG and Norway Supreme Group. Miranda Qu was also the only Chinese judge at the 2014 InnoApps Huawei EU-China App Hackathon. 

Gianpaolo Rando is CTO and co-founder at Swiss biotech SwissDeCode, which applies DNA testing to food traceability. He has worked there full-time since April 2016. Prior to this, Rando gained significant experience working in the field of genomics. He spent three years prior to SwissDeCode’s foundation trialing his DNA food testing technology in his startup BeerDeCoded and assisted in the launch of a compact DNA laboratory at Bento Bio in London. He previously spent almost three years at the University of Geneva in research, co-inventing a technology for ink to change color in response to a specific DNA sequence. His earlier position at the University of Lausanne as a post-doctoral fellow in genomics saw him lead a nine-man team for three and a half years, discovering the hormone that prepares newborns to lactate. Rando’s first post was at Trangenic Operative Products, leading animal research there. Italian-born Rando holds a PhD in biotechnology and pharmacology from the University of Milan as well as a qualification in data science.
