The person who introduced the concept of “maker” to China – even coining its Chinese translation (“chuangke”), which has since taken root in the Chinese language. Today, Zhang Hao (b. 1987) is founder and CTO of logistics robotics startup Dorabot.After studying robotics at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, he joined leading MOOC platform Guokr as a Science and Technology editor. He then became Puzzlebox’s chief hardware architect in San Francisco, later overseeing the manufacturing of Puzzlebox Orbit in Shenzhen. In 2014, he started Dorabot. Zhang was featured in Forbes China’s 30 Under 30 in 2017.

Petri Alava has over 15 years of industry experience in logistics, publishing and waste management. In 1989, he completed a master’s in industrial engineering and started his management career at Finncont Oy, a subsidiary of GWS Group. He went on to work at Rocla Oy in 2001 as managing director of the Rocla Robotruck Group with manufacturing units in Finland and Sweden. He also held senior management roles at Vapo Oy and Kekkilä Oy.In 2015, he became the managing partner of Profon Oy and also co-founded cleantech materials startup Infinited Fiber as CEO. Based in Helsinki, he is also currently chairman of various companies, as well as the CEO of Solid Environmental Technologies.

Tenaya Capital was originally founded in 1995 as Lehman Brothers Venture Partners. In 2009, following Lehman's bankruptcy, Tenaya was spun off into an independent company, with HarbourVest Partners acquired their existing investments. Since then, Tenaya has invested in some major tech companies, including event ticketing company Eventbrite, early fashion e-commerce firm Zappos, and Uber competitor Lyft. They have so far made two investments into Indonesian companies: agritech e-commerce platform TaniHub, and “Uber-for-logistics” company Kargo Technologies. Tenaya typically invests in Series B and Series C rounds, although they have gone into Series A and later rounds as well. 

Fernando Cabello-Astolfi is a Spanish serial entrepreneur and angel investor in the fintech ecosystem. He has a masters degree in Global Market Economics from the London School of Economics. He is the co-founder and CEO of Ibercheck, a leading company that issues solvency reports for individuals in Spain. In 2014, he founded consumer credit fintech Aplazame, which was sold to WiZink Bank in 2018. Fernando is the CEO of Aplazame, heading the product, risk and finance departments. More recently, he launched Devengo, an innovative payroll model that allows employees to collect their salary when needed, instead of on a fixed date each month, at no extra cost to the company.

Endeavor Catalyst is part of the global investment company Endeavor. Launched in 2012 and based in New York, it supports the equity funding efforts of Endeavour entrepreneurs with third party investors. Its portfolio investments had a total capital value of over US$100 million and it specializes in mid-stage investments across sectors and different countries, with significant investment in transportation startups to date. In 2020, it participated in the second €12m part of the €23m Series A round of EV charging hardware startup, Wallbox, with an undisclosed investment. Other recent investments in 2020 include in the US$40m Series D round of Egyptian healthtech Vezeeta and in the undisclosed seed round of Turkish fintech Figopara.

Concept Investimentos is a Brazilian mid-market private equity investor based in São Paulo. Focusing mainly on medtech, the firm was established in 2016 with its first investment in Maquira, a leading manufacturer of dental products in Brazil. It has invested in three companies so far, including participation in the R$1.7m seed investment round of Brazilian edtech Blox.Founding partner Rafael Pilotto Gonçalez previously worked at Pacific Investimentos’ private equity division and Pacific’s partnership with One Equity Partners, JPM’s former global private equity arm in Brazil. He has also worked for the private equity arm of Banco Votorantim and London-based private equity firm Actis.

Capital V is a French rural-based investor that only invests in solutions that facilitate sustained behavioral change and eliminate the consumption of animal products. Its investments range from €10,000 to €1m and currently has 20 startups in its portfolio, mainly plant-based meat makers.In 2020, it announced its participation in Pitch & Plant 2020, the global investment competition by Vevolution for plant-based and animal-free startups, offering £100,000 to finalists. Among its recent investments are participation in the extended 2020 seed round of THIS, a UK-based plant-based meat startup that has raised over £6m to date and, in August 2020, in vegan confectionary manufacturer, Livia’s that has raised over £1m so far.

Since 2005, Demeter Partners has been one of the major VC and private equity funds supporting technology companies in developing solutions for ecological and energy transitions. The firm typically invests €1m–€30m in early and growth stages of startups. With assets worth over €1bn under management, its portfolio in 2019 was estimated to have cut 4.3m tons of CO2 with 575 GWh of clean energy produced. In 2021, Demeter was named the “Best Sustainable Equity investor” by a panel of former Fortune 500 individuals, global experts and industry leaders to recognize Demeter’s commitment to the UN’s SDG and ESG strategy.

Since March 2017, Andrés Garrido Piñero has been working as a consultant at Altair Management Consultants in Barcelona, specializing as a digital transformation and blockchain advisor. He graduated as an Aerospace engineer from the Universidad de Sevilla in 2008 and has worked as a design engineer in Spain and the US for over six years.He completed an international MBA at the IE Business School in Madrid in 2016 and became the CEO and co-founder of ChainGoTech SL in November 2017. ChainGo is a blockchain-powered platform that can be used to build logistics solutions for the industry.

Sergi Roca Puertas obtained a bachelor’s degree (2014) and a master’s (2016) in Industrial Technology Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. His master’s included Industrial Engineering at Finland’s Tampere University of Technology, where he participated in the research of glass fibers.In 2016, he also studied Foreign Trade, Logistics and Supply Management at Euroinnova Business School in Granada and completed work experience as a trading engineer at Madrid-based KL2B.Currently based in San Francisco bay area, he has been working as a deployment strategist at AI-powered analytics and marketing startup Jetlore in Silicon Valley since November 2016. In 2017, he co-founded Plant on Demand (POD) as CTO with an office in Ireland.

Founded in Colorado in 2006, Techstars is a prolific investor and accelerator. More than 2,300 companies have entered its portfolio, with a combined market cap of $32bn. It generally invests at the pre-seed and seed stages across sectors and geographies and has provided over $11.4bn in investment, with 86% of companies still active or acquired.Every year, it selects over 500 startups to join its three-month accelerators, held globally, investing $120,000 in each startup and providing access to the Techstars network for life. Its most recent investments include in the undisclosed January 2021 pre-seed rounds of Latvian logistics monitoring platform Kedeon and US product development software Bild.

Charles Songhurst is a founding partner of hedge fund Katana Capital and also runs the Songhurst Group, which holds assets in a variety of private companies, besides being a prolific angel investor having invested in more than 500 companies to date across sectors and geographies.  His most recent investments have included in the 2021 seed rounds of home-based eye medtech Quadrant Eye and in the $2m funding of Canadian small business logistics startup Tyltgo. Songhurst is a former general manager and former head of corporate strategy at Microsoft. He has a bachelor's in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University.

Ryan Mario Yasin is an engineer, designer and sustainable fashion entrepreneur based in London. Originally from Reykjavik, Iceland, Yasin graduated in aeronautical engineering at Imperial College London and has a master’s in global innovation design from the Royal College of Art.  As a 23-year-old design student, Yasin founded materials technology startup Petit Pli, and developed the design for the company’s first product, a pleated garment that could expand up to seven sizes to last children through their first few years of life. Petit Pli now makes expandable pleated clothes for children and adults, using a fabric derived from recycled plastic and a structure inspired by origami, architecture and space satellites. Petit Pli products have won a number of prestigious awards, such as the UK James Dyson Award, Time Magazine’s best invention of 2020 and the Red Dot Product Design Award.Yasin has a strong interest in photography and in the interplay between art and engineering. In 2020, Yasin was included by Forbes in its 30 Under 30 list for Europe.

Sky Kurtz graduated in finance at Arizona State University in 2004. He also completed a master’s in business administration from Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 2011.He started his corporate career in New York at Lehman Brothers where he worked as an analyst from 2004–2006. He went on to work at CCMP Capital as an associate for three years until 2009. After various board member roles in US, he became the VP of Francisco Partners in 2011, a global private equity firm based in San Francisco.In 2014, he became the CEO of Mateen Corporation that manufactures high-performance fiber-reinforced polymers in the UAE and New Zealand. In 2016, he co-founded Vence Corp, a virtual fencing device manufacturer for livestock management. Currently based in UAE, Kurtz also founded Pure Harvest Smart Farms in Abu Dhabi. He is the CEO of the Middle East’s first commercial-scale, semi-automated, hybrid greenhouse growing system. Kurtz is also an advisor at e-commerce beauty startup Powder.ae and an entrepreneur-in-residence at Shorooq Investments.

Established in 1958, VERSO Capital is a boutique merchant banking and financial services firm based in Luxembourg. It also has offices in Geneva, Fribourg, Vaduz, Dubai, Singapore and BVI. VERSO specializes in sectors like education, food and renewables. Since 2011, the firm has invested over $700bn in venture capital in the global startup ecosystem. Funds worth over $245m were pumped into climatech, foodtech and biotech sectors since 2017. In February 2021, it merged with Swiss alternative asset manager ALDINI Capital that was also founded in 1958 and based in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. VERSO will leverage the expertise of ALDINI in hedge funds, private equity and real estate.
