PayPal is the US-based online payments company founded in 1999 and acquired by eBay in 2002. It is listed in NASDAQ under the ticker code PYPL.Besides facilitating online payments and money transfers for many e-commerce companies and other internet-based businesses, it is famous for its network of former founders and other alumni, many of whom went on to establish successful companies or became investors in the tech and internet industries. Some famous names linked to this network, sometimes called “PayPal Mafia”, include ex-CEO Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Dave McClure (founder of 500 Startups), and Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn co-founder).PayPal has invested in several companies, including ride-hailing firms Gojek and Uber and e-commerce platform MercadoLibre. It has also established PayPal Ventures as a separate VC arm and PayPal Incubator to support early-stage startups.

Microsoft is a US-based technology company that focuses on software products and services. Its Windows operating system is one of the most widely used in the world, and it is also a leader in the video games industry thanks to its Xbox video game platform. In the corporate world, it is best known for its Azure cloud computing services. It is one of the most valuable companies in the world alongside rival Apple, social media network Facebook, and internet giant Google. Microsoft is an active investor in the technology industry. It invests through its main business entity, as well as through subsidiaries such as M12, formerly known as Microsoft Ventures.

Danish asset management company Maj Invest was established in 2005. Based in Copenhagen, it is owned by the management, employees and Danish institutional investors, PKA, Realdania and PBU. Its main businesses are in asset management and private equity. It recently ventured into the financial services sector with Maj Bank.In 2009, Maj Invest launched into international private equity activities, with offices in Singapore, Indonesia’s Jakarta,Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City and Lima in Peru. Future Positive Capital is a Paris-based VC with a second office in London. Its investments cover deep-technology companies applying AI, biotechnology, synthetic biology, as well as robotics. Co-funded in 2016 by ex-Index Ventures associate Sofia Hmich along with Alexandre Terrien and Michael Rosen; it has made 18 investments to date. In 2019 Future Positive raised over $57m pan-European impact investment fund, claiming that most European VCs are continuing to staying focused on sectors, such as consumer, fintech, and marketing, or web and mobile technologies. Future Positive’s belief is that there is instead, a long-tail of investment opportunities to back businesses that actually tackle “the world’s most pressing problems”.Through this fund, it will back throughout Seed and Series A stages, with the possibility to follow up on Series B investing between around €300,000 and €5m. Since then the company has backed startups in the like of BioBeats, an AI company focused on preventative mental health, cell-based startup Meatable, and more recently NotCo, the Chilean unicorn disrupting the food and beverage sector with AI-enabled plant-based products.The team counts on an extensive network of mentors, innovators, impact angel investors and entrepreneurs such as F1 pilots Nico Rosberg, the MD of Alibaba France Sebastien Badault, the Omid Ashtari the President of Citymapper amongst others.

Founded over 110 years ago from several small agricultural cooperative banks, the Dutch commercial banking group Rabobank has over 10m customers across 47 countries. The banking group’s Rabo Investments vehicle manages Rabo Ventures with a €120m fund investing globally in early-stage fintech and agtech startups. There is also a €30m fund-of-funds to partner with leading VCs in other funding rounds like the $12m funding round of Dutch e-scooter company GO Sharing.The Rabobank Food & Agri Innovation Fund specializes in supporting enterprises involved in creating sustainable solutions for diverse food and agricultural sectors including livestock farms. Rabo F&A Innovation Fund currently has 11 agri-foodtech startups in its portfolio, including participation in a $12m Series A round of Vence, US-based virtual fencing tech company for livestock management.

Based in Linz, Klaus Hofbauer is an angel investor via his investment vehicle HOKL Ventures and the co-founder and CEO of Austria’s leading career job portal Karriere.at, established in 2004. As an angel investor, Hofbauer’s investments have included agriculture marketplace Markta, second-hand electronics marketplace Refurbed and leisure fishing booking site Hejfish. As a shareholder, he  joined Refurbed as a board member in 2020.  

Founded in 2012, Purple Orange’s objective is to support the transition away from animals in the food chain, supporting early-stage food and biotech companies across the globe with a focus on alternative proteins and cellular agriculture. It currently has 12 startups from different nations in its portfolio. Its most recently disclosed investments have been in the December 2020 pre-seed round of Chinese cultured meat startup CellX and in the November 2020 $500,000 pre-seed round of Swedish plant-based food vending startup VEAT. 

Bristol Myers Squibb or BMS is one of the world’s largest biopharmaceutical companies developing medicines in oncology, hematology, immunology and cardiovascular disease. It invests directly and via VC funds, including Life Sciences Partners (LSP) and BioGeneration Ventures, as LP. BMS is headquartered in New York and has 10 offices and facilities within the US and 13 in overseas locations, namely, Puerto Rico, Canada, France, Belgium, the UK, Ireland, Germany, Japan and China. 

SkyDeck Berkeley is the startup accelerator initiated by the University of California, Berkeley. It was established to commercialize the university’s research arm and startup ventures of its alumni. It provides non-equity funding assistance, mentorship and networking opportunities, as well as specialist resources for not-for-profit ventures.Since 2012, SkyDeck-backed startups have raised total funding of over $1.47bn, with 17 achieving exits through acquisitions. The accelerator’s investment-arm is Berkeley SkyDeck Fund also invests about $100,000 per startup during the program. Half of the SkyDeck fund’s profits goes to UC Berkeley to support public education projects. The fund is run by Chon Tang as managing partner and Brian Bordley as principal. Contributors to the fund include private individuals, corporations and VCs like Sequoia Capital, Sierra Ventures and Canvas Ventures.

VNV Global was originally founded as Vostok Nafta in 1996, with its first investment in Russia. The investment vehicle initially focused on investments in agriculture and natural resources, but began to diversify into early consumer internet companies like Avito and Tinkoff Bank. Shares were listed on NASDAQ OMX and the VC pivoted to high-growth tech investments in 2007. In 2015, the name was changed to Vostok New Ventures and shortened to VNV Global in 2020 to reflect its international strategy to expand outside Europe.The mid-cap NASDAQ Stockholm exchange-listed VNV mainly invests in mobility, medtech and marketplaces. It currently has 31 startups in its portfolio and six exits managed to date. Recent investments led by VNV include the $43m Series B funding of London-based food waste app OLIO in September 2021 and the $1.6m seed round of Vietnamese dating app Fika in October 2021. 

Adrian Cheng Chi-kong  is a third generation heir to HK billionaire Cheng Yu-tung.Adrian Cheng Chi-kong founded K11 brand in 2008, and became Executive Vice-Chairman at New World Development in 2015.Besides traditional retail, he invests in more areas such as food, fashion, technology.He founded C Ventures to invest in the businesses that focus on millennials. C Ventures has invested in Moda Operandi, an American fashion startup, Flont, luxury jewelry rental service, among others.He invested in American AI startup ObEN and Chinese cooking video platform Daydaycook, etc, through K11.He also invested in Aibee, Hua Medicine and Xiaohongshu as individual investor.
