Shell Foundation is the not-for-profit investment arm of the global energy giant Shell.  Based in London, the foundation was set up in 2000 to invest in social and environmental impact companies, including startups with the potential to reach out to over 10m low-income consumers and achieve financial viability within 10 years. The foundation mainly invests at the pre-seed and seed funding stage and currently has 77 startups in its portfolio. In January 2021, it joined the $790,000 seed round of African agritech social enterprise AgroCenta and also gave a $350,000 grant to sustainable mobility platform Easy Matatu in Uganda.

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams is also CEO at media company Medium and an angel investor with disclosed investments in 18 startups to date. His investments are across multiple market segments and are all based in the US. His most recent disclosed investments include participation in the $4.6m seed round of compensation fintech player OpenComp in March 2021, as well as in the $30m Series B round of audio and video creation platform Descript in January 2021.

DX Ventures is the Berlin-based investment vehicle of on-demand app unicorn Delivery Hero. The VC currently has 12 startups in its portfolio including EU rival Glovo. It also invests in social commerce and on-demand delivery startups in Latin America like Facily and Rappi.Investments in September 2021 include participation in the $43m Series B round of British food-sharing app OLIO and $5m Series A funding round for Toku, a Singapore-based startup and Asia Pacific’s dedicated cloud communications provider. It also invested in Leipzig-based sustainable foodtech, the nu company, that produces vegan chocolates and organic proteins.

French investment firm Eurazeo was established in 2001 and has a portfolio of €5 billion in assets.

One of the earliest and independent VC firms in China, Chengwei Capital was founded in Shanghai in 1999. It’s also the first and only evergreen fund in China.With Yale University Endowment as its largest investor, the VC limited partners also include institutional investors from around the world. With a portfolio of about 30 companies, the firm mainly invests in manufacturing, consumer goods, education, internet and petroleum & natural gas.In 2012, Chengwei and China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) jointly launched the $100m CEIBS-Chengwei Venture Capital Fund to invest in early- and growth-stage companies founded or managed by CEIBS alumni. The VC also seeks to support entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses over a long period of time, acting as their long-term business partner. 

SoftBank announced its second Vision Fund of about $108bn in July 2019 to invest in technology startups across the world. SoftBank had originally planned to contribute $38bn to the new fund. However, its Vision Fund I was badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and losses resulting in lower valuations of its investments in Uber and WeWork.In February 2020, the Japanese conglomerate decided to inject more money into the Vision Fund II before raising new funds from other LPs. With $10bn committed to the second fund by the SoftBank Group, the new fund has now invested in 13 portfolio companies including co-leading the Series C round for XAG in November 2020.

Leonardo DiCaprio is a Hollywood actor and angel investor, who runs his own charitable foundation in aid of climate action, wildlife protection, and ecosystems and communities under threat. Since 1998, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has invested more than $100m in some 132 organizations worldwide, the majority of which are charities. DiCaprio has also invested in 12 for-profit companies in recent years. The most recent of these investments include his 2018 participation in the Series A round for Magnus, an app that has been called Shazam for art, as well as a 4Q17 investment in Swiss deeptech player and provider of VR and AR applications technology, MindMaze.

Green Innovations is an impact fund that invests in large-scale projects addressing global sustainability challenges, focusing on the agriculture, biotechnology, education, energy, housing and water sectors. It is headed by Angola-based Portuguese businessman Jorge Marques, and linked to Israeli group Mitrelli. Green Innovations took control of Biocant, Portugal’s biggest biotech park, in a privatization move in 2017–2018. Green Innovations's stable of companies includes Green Biotech, created to invest in biotechnology in Portugal, and Green Services Innovations, linked to the exploration of phosphates in Congo.Its recent investments include in the June 2021 $85m Series C round and February 2021 $25m Series B of Portuguese home physiotherapy tech solution SWORD Health, the world’s fastest-growing musculoskeletal solution. 

A spinoff from Chinese investment bank China International Capital Corp, CDH has its roots in private equity. It started in 2002, raising its first fund of US$102 million. As of end-2015, it had over US$15 billion in assets under management, spanning private equity, public equities, real estate and more. It has invested in more than 150 companies, including WH Group, Belle International, Mengniu Dairy, Qihoo 360 and Luye Pharma; and has offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore and Jakarta.
