bp ventures is an investment arm of the energy group BP with an annual venture investment budget between $150m and $200m. The group invests in new energy solutions, with over 30 startups’ investments in its portfolio supporting BP’s core business in oil and gas.bp ventures has increasingly invested over the past years in carbon-management technologies, low-carbon products, and advanced mobility through EV charging companies like the Chinese Shanghai PowerShare Tech and the California-based FreeWire Technologies.

GoHub Ventures is the Valencia-based corporate venture capital arm of Global Omnium, a company specialised in water management. The firm invests in the seed and scale-up phases with a ticket size between €500,000 - €3m.The comnpany has so far invested €11m until 2020 and is mostly backing deep tech startups working in AI, big data, 3D, IoT and robotics and cybersecurity sectors. 

Based in New York, VectoIQ was formed in 2016 to fund startups in the smart mobility space. It is led by Steve Girsky, former vice-chairman of General Motors with more than 30 years in the automobile industry. Mary Chan is the managing partner, who also worked at GM as president of global connected consumer. The VC mainly invests in sectors relating to autonomous vehicles, connected car, smart mobility, MaaS, electrification and cybersecurity.

With more than 175 years of history, Navistar is the fourth biggest truck-maker in the US. The company drives new innovations in engine technologies, with products ranging from commercial trucks and buses to defense vehicles.In June 2020, it partnered with self-driving trucking startup TuSimple to produce L4 autonomous trucks. It also invested in its first Chinese company TuSimple.In March 2021, Navistar stockholders approved acquisition by TRATON, part of the Volkswagen Group. TRATON has also invested in TuSimple.

TRATON is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group and one of the world’s largest producer of commercial vehicles. It manufactures light-duty commercial vehicles, trucks and buses at 29 production and assembly sites in 17 countries.The company is now focusing on developing electric trucks and announced in March 2021 that it will invest a total of €1.6bn in e-mobility R&D by 2025. In September 2020, it partnered with self-driving trucking startup TuSimple to mass produce driverless trucks.In March 2021, Navistar stockholders approved the acquisition of Navistar by TRATON. Subject to regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to be completed by mid-May.

Beyond Investing is a Geneva-based firm investing in early-stage venture capital and equity growth startups mainly in European developed markets. With average investments of €200,000, the firm’s core investment strategy focuses on sustainability with an investment period lasting 5–10 years.The impact investor targets innovative startups involved in vegan, cruelty-free and plant-based alternatives; biotechnologies, foodtech, new materials, clothing and lifestyle sectors. Successful portfolio foodtechs include Mosa Meat, BlueNalu and Shiok Meats.With a team of vegan finance professionals in the US and Europe, Beyond Investing listed the first US Vegan Climate ETF (VEGN) on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2019. The ETF tracks Beyond Investing’s US Vegan Climate Index which covers an index of 495 of the largest-capitalization companies in the US stock market. The ethical investment option aims to exclude stocks in companies with activities that are not aligned with its vegan-themed, cruelty-free and fossil-fuel-free investing ethos.

The Plantbase Foundation is a non-profit institution run by entrepreneur and impact investor Willem Blom based in The Netherlands. Most of the Plantbase activities are backed by donors. At least 80% of the donations are used to support enterprises that facilitate the shift from animal agriculture to a vegan lifestyle. The foundation has invested in foodtechs involved in the meat, fish and dairy industries; as well as food delivery and apps. Its portfolio includes fast-growing startups like Heura, Meatable, Livekindly and Mission Barns. It also works with investment partners like Kale United, Mile High Vegan Network, Vegan Entrepreneurs Network and GlassWall Syndicate.
