Armed with a master’s in Business Administration and Computer Science from the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, João Romão is looking to change the way companies and audiences interact with social media and social networks. His experience includes consulting stints around Portugal at AIESEC and Novabase Consulting and as the CEO of Wishareit, a Lisbon-based social shopping platform. David Katz is the Canadian co-founder, president and CEO of Plastic Bank, a-first-of-a-kind social enterprise startup that monetizes plastic waste collection for some of the world’s poorest communities. Katz was inspired by a university seminar about recycling plastic waste in 2013 and founded Plastic Bank with CTO and brand strategist Shaun Frankson in Vancouver.In 2019, he became a fellow for the Unreasonable Group’s Impact Hub in Vancouver, an organization that supports social and environmental entrepreneurship. In 2011, he also founded Vancouver’s Core Values Institute, a consulting and global thought leadership platform for entrepreneurs.In 2014, he was also president of Vancouver’s chapter of the Entrepreneurs Organization for one year. He was named Global Citizen of the Year in 2014 by the international organization that has a network of over 10,000 business owners in 131 chapters across 40 countries. He also won the 2017 UN Lighthouse award for Planetary Health and Plastic Bank received the Paris COP21 Climate Conference Sustania Community Award in 2015.Katz completed a diploma in Hospitality Administration & Management at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1991 and started his own business in 1992 as founder and CEO of Nero Alarms. From 2005 to 2014, Katz worked full-time as the founder and president of Nero Global Tracking, a SaaS platform created to monitor the operations of mobile service vehicles. Nero SaaS is used in many Canadian cities and by the nation’s Defence Ministry. The company is now part of Vecima Networks Inc.

Founded in Washington DC in 2016, AV Ventures is co-founded by US not-for-profit organizations, the Agricultural Cooperative Development International and Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance.AV Ventures focuses on supporting SMEs that facilitate financing for farmers to improve sustainable supply chain management and boost social impact in Africa and Central Asia. Investments in tech startups include the $790,000 seed round of AgroCenta in January 2021. Through AV Frontiers in Bishkek, the VC also recently participated in April’s investment round of Kyrgyzstan-based ololoAkJol Resort, a hub for digital nomads, or independent remote workers.

Lei is co-founder, chairman and CEO of Xiaomi, one of the world’s largest smartphone companies. Born in December 1969, he holds a degree in Engineering from Wuhan University. With a personal net worth of US$11.2 billion, Lei has invested in 33 companies as a business angel, including Vancl.com, UCWeb, and YY Inc., a live streaming social media platform in China. He has also invested in 270 companies through Shunwei Capital, where he is a founding partner. Lei's investment focuses are e-commerce, mobile internet and social networking.

Facebook is a social networking platform founded by Mark Zuckerberg and partners in 2004. It is listed on the NASDAQ exchange under ticker code FB. Throughout its development it has acquired various complementary social media and networking services, such as Instagram and WhatsApp.As an investor, Facebook has invested in a wide range of companies. It invested in and later acquired virtual reality headset developers Oculus, and also invested in e-commerce enabler Meesho. In 2020, it joined Google, Tencent and other major tech investors as an investor in Gojek.

Roger Chen (Chen Ziling) went to the University of Chicago in 2013 to read Economics and Computer Science. But he dropped out one year later to become an entrepreneur and created the social app SketchMe in March 2015. He founded Shenzhen That Technology Co Ltd in July 2015. The company launched social app Remark in December 2015 and the Spot app in January 2018.

Established in Shanghai in 2014, Wuqiong Venture Capital is an early-stage investment firm, having backed more than 10 startups in China including Beautysite, CeCelife and Orange-social.

Engage Capital was set up by social media platform YY Inc.’s investment department. The equity fund invests primarily in TMT, entertainment and consumer products. Engage Capital manages a USD fund and an RMB fund. 

Pedro Moura combines his knowledge of Computer Science and Sociology – the former as a graduate of the Instituto Superior Technico and the latter as a postgraduate of the University of Evora – in his line of work. Moura started his career co-founding several companies such as social shopping platform Wishareit and e-commerce social platform GetSocial, where he served as CTO. He is currently an adviser for the latter and is the CEO of mobile software platform Mobizy.

Founded by Ray Hu and Alex Yin in 2014, Blue Lake Capital has about US$200 million under management, focusing on early-stage investment in vertical industry such as O2O, social media, smart hardware, mobile internet and education.

Tety Sianipar believes that technology can be used to solve social issues. Armed with a degree in Information Technology, she worked briefly as a game developer before moving to an international NGO. In 2014, she co-founded Saujana, a social enterprise focusing on disability issues and environmental conservation. Tety is also the CTO of Saujana that developed a job search platform for disabled people that was launched as Kerjabilitas a year later.
